How is veganism healthy?

I'm not vegan but I've always wondered this. When people become vegan don't they cut out a lot of things that are important to the human body, like protien and calcium? I can understand why people go vegetarian but veganism seems like it's just taking it too far. Great Leap, I watched the video, it's disgusting. I never knew that kind of stuff happened to those poor animals
