How does astrology work if constellations are only markers for signs?

My friends who like astrology say that it doesn't matter at all that constellation locations change, since the constellations don't cause the influence. They've told me that each sign is marked out by 30 degree, and it's some other force that causes it. What exactly is it then that causes the influence?

No one ever explains what kind of force or how it is detected and measured. It would have to be a lot of different forces, one from each planet. Do they obey the laws of physics like the other know forces? Why is angle important but not distance? The real influence is the belief. Belief is often more powerful than the truth.
