Do you know about the Buddhist belief where money is burnt to provide for someone who has passed away?

Question by never asked to be Aprincess on "Buddhist":

I know that there is a Tibetan Buddhist belief and maybe for other Buddhists as well, where fake money is burnt to provide money for the passage or rebirth of one who has passed away. Do you know anything about this? Do you have to burn the money at the funeral or burial or can you burn it later on? Where and when do you have to burn it?
