Should you use MINDFULNESS in order to be more SPONTANEOUS?
Answer by RWPossum
The idea of mindfulness is to observe your thoughts and actions as they happen, sort of like being in a movie theater and watching yourself on the screen. In theory, this shouldn't make you any less spontaneous. Suppose you're at a party and you say something dumb to one of your friends and right away you know that it's dumb. Mindfulness is awareness of what you say and awareness of yourself noticing the mistake. What you want to get from mindfulness is what's sometimes called "inner peace." That doesn't mean being perfectly calm all the time. Changes in mood, getting excited and upset, are part of life and we have to live with that. But being able to observe yourself having the highs and lows makes things easier. It makes it easier for you to be stable. It's good for when bad things happen to you and also for when good things happen, because you can fly off the handle when you have a stroke of good luck. Say, if you won a lot of money with the lottery, your first reaction could be totally unrealistic ("All my problems are solved!"). I'd say the thing that helps spontaneity most is confidence, and that comes from experience.
