Does anyone know any holistic ways to cure a kitten with a cold?

Question by Andie on "Holistic":

I just inherited a 6-week old kitten, and while I am not opposed to taking her to the vet I can't get her in for a few more days. She has terribly goopy eyes and raspy breath. I had a kitten once before with this same ailment and the vet said it was an URI, and prescriped an antibiotic. I am just wondering if anyone knows any herbs or holistic ways to help her (and me!) out.

Actually, the antibiotics won't help the sickness she has, it will only prevent bacteria from infecting her while her system is weak from fighting off the cold. So there is really no reason she needs the antibiotic at all. If you have a humidifier, turn it on for her or consider turning the hot water tap on and letting her breath the steam. That will loosen the gunk in her lungs in airways. Use a warm cloth to gently wipe off the eye goo. The warm on her sinuses will help loosen the gunk in there too. Feed her water with a baby's medicine shooter (or eyedropper). Get some canned kitten food or meat baby food and add water until it is liquid and give that to her in the medicine shooter as well. Human drugs for colds are poison to cats don't give any of those. I'm not familiar enough with herbs to give advise on those, but this is what we do for sick kitties in the clinic and the SPCA. Supportive care is best, plus rest and some TLC and she should be better in a week or 2. Good luck and hope this helps.
