Answer by Joe Lanzendorfer
The holistic approach is the idea that something as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. In anthropology it is important because there are many different cultural institutions and mechanisms that interact with each other to make up the culture as a whole. It is important to think critically when observing culture, looking at all the different aspects of culture, their purpose, and how they interact and why.
