What is "mindfulness" meditation and how do I practice it?

Question by dovernomore on "Mindfulness":

I think meditation may help me with finding inner peace and also improving my memory, focus, and mental sharpness. Someone suggested I try "mindfulness" meditation. I have no idea what this is. Can someone explain what "mindfulness" meditation is and how I can practice it? Thanks

Ok....its one of those things that I can better explain by example.... You know what its like to devour a bag of potato chips without thinking? while watching a movie for example. That is the opposite of mindfulness - its mindless... And I use that example, but often, an excercise used to demonstrate mindfulness is to give a student a single potato chip (yep, just one) and have them savour it in bites, to really feel the texture change in the mouth, to expereince how salt tastes different in different parts of the mouth, etc. YOu would be amazed at how long it takes to eat a chip while you are being mindful.... BAsically, being mindful means being completely present and attending to what you are doing....not being elsewhere mentally, or not just going through the motions...but really being there 100% Sorry about the typinhg - I'm having some keyboard issues
