How do Hindu and Buddhist beliefs discourage capitalism and industrialization?
Answer by joe1max
I would not call India one of the 'least industrialized.' While it may not be completely industrialized, I would say it is a second world country. Most of the countries that are predominately Buddhist or Hindu fell under communist rule. Buddhism was outlawed by many of the communist governments. The ruling communist (IE Mao) declared that Buddhism was used to oppress the masses, and communism would be better. Many Buddhist, including the Dali Lama have fought for democracy and capitalism for a long time. (Look at Tibet and Burma) Buddhist very much believe in science, and change. For a lack of better way to explain it; they just stopped inventing material things for awhile and focused on the human mind and spirit. It is said that Tibet is advanced in human nature as America is in technology. An interesting story regarding the Dali Lama is when an atheist asked him if reincarnation were to ever be proven false what would Buddhist do? The Dali Lama said that they would stop teaching it then. He then asked the man if how this test would be done and if he could prove reincarnation one way or another. Of course the atheist could not and stated so.
