They were scientists that were experimenting on the unique properties on the island, the Others hated them for that. May have been a plan by Jacob to kill his brother the Smoke Monster. MIB likely got Young Ben to the Others by pretending to be his mother. Jacob believed in *always* giving people chooses so he doesn't intervene when the Others wiped them out and chose Ben as their leader. Jacob needed new candidates since the Others were corrupt, the ones on the plane.
